Coles and Woolworths reveal big Christmas savings thanks to 'once-in-10-year' event

While its been a tough year for Aussies, there may be some festive cheer from the big supermarkets to end 2023.

Coles and Woolworths have copped serious flak this year for their part in a punishing cost-of-living crisis, but the big two supermarkets are looking to end 2023 with a bit of festive cheer stressing their commitment to bring "great value" to the Christmas shop.

Amid a rare oversupply of prawns, both supermarkets have revealed their prices for seafood for the coming weeks which are surprisingly easy on the eye.

“It wouldn’t be an Aussie Christmas without seafood. Our team has been working closely with our dedicated suppliers for the last 12 months to ensure Woolworths customers can enjoy quality seafood at great value as part of their festive spread," Woolworths Commercial Director for Seafood, Tim Dudding, said.

Great value from 'once-in-a-10-year-catch'

Prices are largely on a par or lower than last year's Christmas, with Coles and Woolworths identifying a handful of items savvy shoppers can make significant savings.

The pick of the bunch is both supermarkets' price for raw Banana Prawns at $14 a kilo, significantly down from $22 a kilo last year. According to Coles, it's thanks to a "once-in-a-10-year catch".

For comparison, Aldi - Australia's favourite supermarket - don't offer fresh prawns, but are slinging 1 kilogram of frozen Tiger prawns for $26.99.

Those looking for a "fantastic table centrepiece", Western Rock Lobsters are coming in at $22 each at Coles and $23 at Woolworths, not far off the unprecedented prices of 2020 when China slapped restrictions on Australian exports. A frozen 2 pack at Aldi, weighing about 380g, is $34.99.

Other notable offers include:

  • Coles' Australian Cooked Fresh Black Tiger Prawns down to $30 a kilo from $38 until December 27 (Excluding WA).

  • Woolworths' Jumbo Prawn Skewers 240g at $10.00, down from $13.00

  • Woolworths' Clearly Premium Smoked Salmon 500g: $25.00, save $6

"This Christmas, we want customers to spend less," Dudding said.

The supermarkets are confident Cyclone Jasper, which is set to make contact with Queensland's north on Wednesday, will not affect seafood supply. Oysters are also expected to be in good supply.

Coles and Woolworths began slashing prices on hams in October, with both supermarkets saying they understood the struggles many Australians were going through this year.
