For sale: This Aussie island is cheaper than a house
Purchasing property might be a far-away dream, but then again, so is buying a whole island.
But it turns out buying an island might actually be way more achievable - the national median house price is $748,217, or a whopping $1.03 million in Sydney.
But for just $385,000, a 69-acre island off the coast of Queensland could be yours.
Worthington Island is within a 30 minute boat ride to the nearest city, Gladstone Harbour, and it’s “easily the cheapest island” Private Islands Australia agent, Richard Vanhoff, has ever seen.
“The owner just wants to sell the island and move on,” Vanhoff told the Courier Mail.
“He’s had it for many, many years and he doesn't visit the island all that often now.”
Worthington Island was leased from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines with eight years left to run, but Vanhoff says the tenants will renew the lease for another 25 years.
Described as ideal for a family or someone who loves the outdoors, the island is close to all facilities, and of course the fishing is great.
“There’s an abundance of crabs and fish.”
“The current owner tells me he can live off the back door for a whole month just eating fish and crabs — and mangoes.”
Vanhoff said the new owner could resurrect the island’s orchards to offset any costs, and make use of the now-empty bee boxes.
