Aussies around the country will be hitting the pub today to play two-up, but the coins traditionally used for the game could be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

The classic game - which is only legal to play on Anzac Day - is played using two Australian pennies tossed into the air with a wooden kip (or paddle). Punters will bet with each other on whether the coins will land on heads or tails.

But did you know the rarest Australian pennies could be worth up to $1 million? Popular Aussie TikToker The History Of Money said there were only six coins in existence that had ever pushed that price, while most regular 1930 pennies in the market go for around $50,000 at auction.

Only 3,000 of the regular 1930 pennies were made and were only released directly through the Royal Australian Mint’s visitor program and not put into circulation.

“It is the holy grail and they can sell [for] up to $1 million,” The History of Money said.

Many users flooded the comments to claim they owned one of the coveted coins, with one sadly claiming they threw them out.

“My aunt gave me a collection of those and, in fifth grade, I thought they were pointless so … [it] went in the bin,” the user said.

“My dad had one. He sold it ages ago for 7k,” another said.

Other pricey Aussie coins

While the classic 1930 Australian penny is very rare, there are other Aussie coins you might be more likely to have in your collection.

The 2012 remembrance $2 coin, which has a red poppy on one side, was one of the lowest-minted coins in Australian history, with just 503,000 entering circulation. If you have one of those in your spare change, it could fetch you a massive $370.

Likewise, if you have one of the 2013 purple coronation $2 coins, you could also score around $180 for it.

The 2013 coin had a mintage of around 995,000, making it also quite a rare find.
